Yasu came to the U.S. to attend school in Salem, West Virginia in 1992, and earned a degree in Communication studies in 1994. He then attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and earned a degree in Exercise and Sports Science in 1998. He has been working as a personal trainer since 1998.
Yasu’s credentials as a personal trainer include certfications from Aerobic Fitness Association of America (A.F.A.A.), International Association of Resistance Trainers (I.A.R.T.), and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S.). In 2002 AND 2003, he received “The Fitness Professional of the Year” award from I.A.R.T. (Runner-up in 2001) and published a case study of a client in the I.A.R.T. annual fitness magazine. Yasu is a nationally Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from National Strength and Conditioning Association (N.S.C.A.) and holds Advanced Fitness Boxing Certification from the Boxing Fitness Institute (B.F.I.).
Yasu also gained experience in rehabilitation. In 2005 and 2006, he assisted physical therapists at Moses Cone Hospital in both inpatient and outpatient facilities for two years, mostly working with patients recovering from post-stroke and post- knee and hip replacement surgeries. In 2007, he volunteered at Murphy-Wainer Physical Therapy Clinic, also in Greensboro, N.C., assisting their patients with shoulder/knee issues.
Physical activities are a big part of of Yasu’s lifestyle. He played organized basketball from grammar school in Japan to college in N.A.I.A. in West Virginia. In addition to resistance training and cardio training throughout college, he started boxing after his second college and, now certified, teaches fitness boxing for general fitness. Yasu also worked with a Toughman contestant (amateur boxing match), who earned second place out of 75 participants in the tournament. He has clients who love these conditioning workouts, aging from 14-65 yrs of age! Yasu can teach anyone to punch like a pro!
